First words from Yoann Richomme and Yann Eliès (Paprec-Arkéa)

Yoann Richomme: Our aim for two years has been to finish the Jacques Vabre. Mission accomplished. The boat finishes in good condition. We learnt a lot. I didn’t think we could win it, as we had so much to learn. Particularly me. Thomas and Morgan had better knowledge of their boat than us. So we don’t have any regrets. We took a lot of notes, because these boats are crazy.

On the way out of the Canaries, we saw they had a faster pace. We suffered when the wind fell below 17 knots. We saw that too in the final days with For the Planet. It was a handicap. I think we did well in spite of this deficit. At the start, Charal and For People were the boats we feared. It took a lot to keep up the pace set by those ahead.

Yann Eliès: It feels like a multihull. At the helm, you start flying. The boat is so fast. But the first 48 hours were tough. Upwind was OK, but the seas were nasty after the front.

Yoann Richomme: He told me he wouldn’t have done that aboard his own boat. It was violent. You can’t withstand that for long. It is hard for the boat and for the sailors on these foilers.

A boat from an older generation is finishing just behind us. She was the best boat from 2020 and continues to be close, even if she suffers in certain conditions. For example when the wind strengthens like this morning at one point.

We thought about the North for ten seconds, because we knew it would be too hard. I wanted to be able to sail back in the other direction. Well done to Justine. It was worth trying and the scenario wasn’t stable. They could have pulled it off.

I’m pleased to have ten days to rest before setting off again. I feel at ease on the boat, but it’s very demanding.

Everyone made a mistake somewhere. We didn’t well with the weather a couple days ago and took the wrong decision. The routing even to get to Madeira was impossible to work out at the start. Thomas didn’t do brilliantly around the Canaries. Charal had their weaker moments too.
