Options, options….IMOCA leaders ponder their choices after great start

After a spectacular start at 0930hrs local time off Le Havre this morning the IMOCA fleet on the 16th Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre made the most of the outgoing tide to boost them on the their way out of the Channel, tacking upwind past the tip of the Cherbourg peninsula this afternoon in gusty westerly breezes in excess of 20kts.

We have lift off……Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre IMOCA fleet off and flying

After an impressive start from Le Havre OT 0830HRS utc this morning in SW’ly winds of 20-25kts, the IMOCA fleet on the 16th Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre double handed race to Martinique were making great speeds westwards towards the entrance to the English Channel, led by one of the pre-race favourites Jéremie Beyou and Franck Cammas on Charal.

Slamming as they approach La Coruna

It was a busy night in the Bay of Biscay and was not always kind for the Class40 and Ocean Fifty crews. The first hours of racing saw two dismastings. Yesterday, the Class40 The Sea Cleaners - Univerre - ENSM lost her mast and is heading for Lorient, while this morning, the same thing happened to the Ocean Fifty boat, Le Rire Médecin-Lamotte (Berry-Joubert). The mast fell at 0330hrs UTC, as the trimaran was sailing in a 20-25 knot NW’ly wind, 90 miles NW of Coruna. While the two skippers were uninjured, the structure has been damaged. Faced with this situation, they requested assistance. Merida, the boat belonging to Adrien Hardy, who specialises in this type of operation, reached the area at 0540hrs to offer his help.

Ocean 50 Le Rire Médecin – Lamotte dismasted off the coast of La Coruña

At 0330hrs UTC, Luke Berry and Antoine Joubert, skippers of the Ocean Fifty Le Rire Médecin-Lamotte, contacted the race direction to inform them they have been dismasted. The sailors are safe and healthy. They are located 90 miles north-northeast of La Coruña in a northwest wind of 20 to 25 knots.
After further checking their boat, they noticed that a float was damaged.
At the request of the sailors, the race management quickly contacted Adrien Hardy, navigator, to meet the duo with his boat Merida. Merida arrived on site at 0540hrs UTC.

Ocean Fifty

Sebastien Rogues and Jean-Baptiste Gellée forced to turn around due to damage

While leading the Ocean Fifty fleet around fifty miles off the coast of La Coruna, Sébastien Rogues and Jean-Baptiste Gellée, aboard Primonial, contacted the race direction at 0425hrs UTC to inform them of a damage to their port float.
There are no injuries on board. The crew is doing well, they are currently sailing under reduced sail on the tack which does not put any strain on the damaged float.
The team is currently assessing a destination port and the two skippers are not seeking assistance.

More info to come.
